Sleep Disorders (Sleep Apnea)

What is it:    
Sleep apnea is a common disorder and defined as an absence of breathing during sleep. Currently, it is recognized that sleep apnea is part of a continuum from health to disease. Apnea is currently defined as cessation of airflow for at least 10 seconds. Normal breathing typically starts, again, sometimes with a loud snort or choking sound. Sleep apnea usually is a chronic condition that disrupts sleep 3+ nights each week.

Who has it:
12 Million Americans.
70% of people who have sleep apnea are obese. Obesity is the factor most likely to lead to sleep apnea.

Consequences:
Untreated sleep apnea can increase the risk for high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, and diabetes.
